What You Can't See Can Hurt You

A clean, efficient system will operate more effectively, be less likely to break down, circulate less dust, save energy and save money.

Take for example the items inside your vacuum cleaner bag after you've vacuumed your floors. You might find items such as dust, dirt, carpet fibers, particles of food, pet dander, etc. Imagine having an open window to a room in your house, closing the door on the room, and never cleaning or dusting that room. These are the same types of items that are inside your air ducts, only worse. Your heating and air conditioning ducts are the lungs of your home.

The most expensive air filtration systems made "will not" remove all the dust and dirt from your air ducts. They will help after the ducts are cleaned.

Air ducts can become contaminated with a variety of materials that may pose risks to your health. The duct system can serve as a means to distribute these contaminants. An unclean system will constantly time release dust and dirt from your duct work into your home every time the system is activated. Just installed a new furnace or air conditioner to replace an old furnace or air conditioner? Part of the high efficiency features of a new furnace or air conditioner is greater air volume and a change of the conditioned air in living space. The new system could be cleaning your duct work for you throughout the inside of your home or office (not a good thing). Have your ducts cleaned soon! If your HVAC technician said duct cleaning is not necessary, question his experience.

Take this simple test to see if your environment requires duct cleaning by our Diversified Mechanical Maintenance professional.

  • Do you have pets? Or did the previous owners have pets?
  • Do you see or have "dust trails" or discoloration on or coming from your registers?
  • Are there registers that do not have any air flow?
  • Are you constantly needing to dust furniture?
  • Are you a smoker?
  • If your home or office was previously owned, were they smokers?
  • Does anyone in your household or office suffer from allergies, asthma, headaches, sinus or nasal congestion, unexplained symptoms or illnesses that could be caused from your home or office environment?
  • Do you feel better outdoors than indoors?
  • Do you have a furnace that uses standard disposable filters?
  • Do you see visible mold growth inside your ducts or on the components of your heating and cooling system?
  • Are your ducts infested with vermin, e.g. rodents or insects?
  • Older home? Even if you are the best housekeeper in the world, what about the person who lived there before you?
  • Newer home? In almost every case, pieces of sheetrock and sheetrock dust, dirt, tile dust, cigarette butts and empty packs, pop cans and other debris fall into your registers during the construction of your home.
  • Has it been two years or longer since your system has been professionally cleaned?
  • Does anyone in your household suffer from a compromised immune system?
  • In one out of every five double wide modular homes, we find mice droppings or dead mice. Mice enter through the cross over ducts that connect the two sides together.
If you said yes to any of these items, you need to have your air ducts cleaned by our Diversified Mechanical Maintenance professionals.

Frequency of cleaning depends on several factors, not the least of which is the preference of the home or office owner. Some factors that may lead a home or business owner to consider more frequent cleaning include:
  • Smokers in the home or office.
  • Pets that shed high amounts of hair and dander.
  • Water contamination or damage to the home, office, or HVAC system.
  • People with allergies, asthma, or compromised immune systems who might benefit from a reduction in the amount of indoor air pollutants in the HVAC system.
  • After home or office renovations or remodeling.
  • Prior to occupancy of a new home or office.
Prices
The Environmental Protection Agency says that, "duct cleaning services typically, but not always, range in cost from $225 (small modular homes) to $1,000 per heating and cooling system (large custom homes, 5,000 sq. ft. plus), depending on the services offered, the size of the system to be cleaned, system accessibility and level of contamination."

All houses and office buildings are created differently.

Free estimates and inspections are recommended.
